Vacation Bible School

A Vacation Bible School (VBS) experience sponsored by First Presbyterian Church, Trinity Presbyterian Church, Ogden Japanese Christian Church, and United Church of Christ Congregational was held on June 16, 17, and 18, 1998 at Trinity Presbyterian Church 140 N. Tyler Ave., Ogden.  We had 68 children 4 years old through 6th grade and there were 57 volunteers.

This 3-day experience of reliving Bibletimes events, occupations, and relationships acquainted children with their Christian heritage.  They came to know Christianity was a living relationship with God in the days when Jesus was teaching.

Through involvement of the Marketplace and living in small family clusters, they grew in their relationship with God and learned some of the Jewish customs of Bibletimes.  As they responded to the street theater dramas of the Bible, the children were helped to understand the Bible is about real people.  As an ending celebration on Thursday night, a Seder meal was served followed by an evening meal.   Families were encouraged to participate with their children during any portion of this VBS experience and many did.  To make the setting more real, the children wore Biblical costumes.

For a little insight as to just what went on there, here are some pictures of the 3 days' events.  Day 2    Day 3

As you can see, the children were exposed to many of the crafts from that time.   Each day, the crafts person did something different.  As an example, the first day for pottery, the children make an incense burner, the second day a pot, and the third was a day to do the project you hadn't had time to do.

Synagogue School

Each day the children went to a   Synagogue School.  There they learned a little about the Hebrew language and what our distant relatives did.

Roman Soldier

There was a Roman Soldier who was there to maintain disipline and add to the realism of the time.

Story Teller

Each day, the children visited the Story Tellers.  They heard the stories of Moses from birth to his people arriving at the promised land and the story of Noah's ark, from God deciding the people were bad, to the flood, to Noah being told to repopulate all the lands.

Jesus Thirsty Women

During this time in history, Jesus was a real man.  During the marketplace, he would be there and talked to the children.  During our marketplace, dramas would be acted out.  Many of the stories of the bible were done and the children were there to witness them.  It brought the stories to life so they could relate to them.

Before Marketplace 29 AD could take place, there was a lot of work to be done.  Besides the many months of planning, there were tents to put up and people to watch over.  Here are just a few of the tireless workers preparing the Marketplace.
